My filming apparatus has evolved over time, including the material of the “picture plane” surface which receives the objects shadows. The final design uses a sheet of rice paper stretched over a timber frame – this produces sharp shadows (due to its single thin layer of translucent material, unlike the diffused shadows with “opal” acrylic), and a slight “grain” to the surface of the picture plane. Filming using the low winter sun meant that the design needed to incorporate the option to have the picture plane titled towards the sun. Castors were added to allow easy movement of the whole assembly.
